Editorial introduction

ARK Hills and Suntory Hall bring high-quality music, hands-on instrument experiences, sound art and craft activities into public spaces in the city. For families, the highlight is the “Sound Playground” on October 10–11: children can listen to short concerts, get hands-on with harps, pianos and violins, and make paper accordions, ocarinas and kazoos. Unlike a traditional children’s concert that asks them to sit still for a long time, it is well suited to a half-day family cultural outing.

What families actually do

The strongest family component is 音の遊び場 (Sound Playground) on Oct 10–11. Children can move between short concerts, instrument-touch experiences, sound installations and small making workshops rather than sitting through one long performance.

Confirmed family programs include:
- Interactive sound artworks by wood artist Ayumi Tsuchiya, designed to be touched and experienced physically.

- Instrument experiences including harp, piano and violin, with specialist guidance.

- Papernica paper accordion workshop: Oct 10–11; same-day reception; starts 11:00 / 12:00 / 14:00 / 15:00 / 16:00; about 30 min; up to 6 simultaneously; ¥3,200; age 6+.

- Decoration ocarina workshop: Oct 10–11; same-day; about 30 min plus drying; up to 10 simultaneously; ¥2,800 including ocarina; age 3+.

- Custom kazoo workshop: Oct 10–11; walk-in while materials last; about 1–5 min; around 3 participants simultaneously; ¥1,500; around age 2+, small children with guardian.

- Family-friendly short concerts include Suzuki Children Ensemble (Oct 10 11:15), Hotchpotch Quintet participatory concerts (Oct 10 12:30; Oct 11 13:35), Suzuki Method concert (Oct 11 11:00), ARK Kids Chor (Oct 11 12:00), junior harp ensemble (Oct 11 14:40), plus picture-book / family music performances.
