Editorial introduction

This is a shrine’s annual festival run by the local community, rather than a “Japanese cultural experience” staged for tourists. The particularly special opportunity is that children in elementary school grades 3–6 can formally sign up to join the children’s mikoshi procession, wearing happi coats and taking their place in the group. Even as spectators, families can experience the full atmosphere of a community festival, with portable shrines and taiko drumming.

  • Check in for the children’s mikoshi at the entrance to Restaurant Kenzo by 13:30 on October 11. Departure is at 13:50, returning around 15:30. Guardians do not join the procession and should watch from the sidewalk.
