Editorial introduction

What makes the Yokohama Museum of Art’s children’s atelier particularly worth recommending is that children are not asked to copy a template and all make the same thing. They choose their own materials and methods from clay, paint and paper for genuinely open-ended creativity. It is low-cost, relies little on language and is a long-running part of the museum’s professional education program.

  • Strollers are not permitted inside the venue. Use the outdoor stroller parking area from 10:15–11:30

What children actually do

There are three open-ended material zones:
1. Clay: natural earth clay.

2. Paint: large-scale painting on surfaces bigger than the child’s body; when weather allows, courtyard painting and colored-water play are included.

3. Paper: colored paper, cardboard, scissors, glue, staplers and tape for independent making.

Cleanup is part of the program: paint cleanup starts around 11:15; clay/paper around 11:20.

Important family notes

  • Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty.
  • The museum warns that natural earth clay can affect people with a soil allergy.
  • Strollers cannot enter the activity venue; outdoor stroller parking is provided during activity time.
  • In very hot/cold/rainy weather, painting activities move indoors.
  • Guardian participation is expected, not just passive observation.
  • Contact: Education Group 045-221-0300, 10:00–18:00.
