ExperienceHighlights
Choose your main East or West Garden targets and follow neighbouring exhibits to avoid repeated cross-park walks.
Allow a half-day, see favourites first and protect meal and rest time rather than trying to see every animal.
- Animals on display and viewing times change; old travel guides do not guarantee today's sightings.
- Most walking is outdoors and can be tiring in heat or rain. Rental strollers have age and weight limits.
Reviews
Highlights
I enjoyed seeing elephants, doves, a white horse and polar bears.
The grounds were spacious, with adorable red pandas, small-clawed otters and unusual animals.
Drawbacks
We entered at 3 pm on a rainy day; most main animals were marked unavailable.
I came to see the brown bear, but it was exhausted by the heat and barely moved.
Frequently asked questions
How long should we allow for Ueno Zoo?
Allow 3–5 hours with children because the zoo spans East and West areas. Pick priority animals and a lunch stop first.
Can we visit in the rain?
Most of the zoo is outdoors. In rain, check animal visibility, avoid repeated East–West crossings and plan indoor rest stops.
Can we rent a stroller?
B-type strollers rent for ¥500 per day at gates including Main and Benten, for roughly 7 months–4 years and up to about 18 kg.
What facilities are there for families?
- Rainy days:Most of the zoo is outdoors and East–West travel is substantial; narrow priorities and plan indoor breaks in rain
- Toilets and nursing:Multiple nursing spaces provide chairs, hot water for bottles and baby beds
- Food:Food shops and rest areas are available in both zones; off-peak meals make seating easier on busy days
- Strollers:B-type strollers rent for ¥500/day at gates including Main and Benten, for roughly 7 months–4 years and up to about 18 kg
